Crooked River Gorge

Dramatic and beautiful, the Crooked River Gorge is a formidable obstacle to cross. The 300-foot deep gorge exposes the volcanic upheavals that shaped the central region of the state.

The bridges that span the gorge are an historic record of the path of progress in the Twentieth Century. A little over 100 years ago, people were crossing the Crooked River in wagons and stagecoaches. The Trail Crossing, one mile upstream of the current highway, was an important link between the growing cities in Central Oregon.
